What is ROLO?
ROLO (Register of Land-based Operations) is recognized by Build UK as a top Health, Safety, and Environmental Awareness Course in the UK. It's designed exclusively for the Land-based industries by landscaping professionals. Developed and owned by the British Association of Landscape Industries, ROLO aims to improve health and safety, increase environmental awareness, and reduce workplace accidents. It also encourages employers to keep a record of workers in the Land-based sector who have achieved a recognized level of competence.
Why is ROLO Important?
The Department of Trade & Industry made it a requirement for trade bodies to ensure their members have proper health and safety training. Employers must show that their personnel are well-trained. In July 2014, the United Kingdom Contractors Group (UKCG) officially recognized BALI’s ROLO Health, Safety, and Environmental Awareness Course under its UKCG Health and Safety Training Standard, now known as Build UK.

Certificates are valid for five years, but applicants must ensure the course has been completed within the last two years when applying for a LISS/CSCS card. Before the five years runs out, the relevant refresher course can be completed.

ROLO Operative Course
The ROLO Operative courses provide essential health and safety training, serving as a prerequisite for obtaining a LISS/CSCS card. The training covers basic Health & Safety topics, including laws, regulations, risk assessment, hazard awareness, protective equipment, electrical awareness, excavations, work at height, PUWER, LOLER, and more.

ROLO Supervisor Course
The ROLO Supervisor course, developed by the British Association of Landscape Industries, offers an alternative way to achieve the Land-based Industry Skills Scheme (LISS) and/or the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).These courses are fully approved by CSCS and Build UK, considered equivalent to CITB SSSTS and SMSTS courses. They are the only route for practicing Supervisors in the land-based industry to obtain their LISS/CSCS cards.

Health & Safety Law & Management: Understanding legal obligations (Health & Safety at Work Act 1974), safety legislation, Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations, and conducting risk assessments.

Supervisor Roles: Leading, managing, and supporting teams to promote safety and site productivity.

Environmental Awareness: Understanding environmental legislation and impact, including waste management.

ROLO Manager Course
The ROLO Manager course, crafted by the British Association of Landscape Industries, provides an alternative path for obtaining the Land-based Industry Skills Scheme (LISS) and/or the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).These courses have received full approval from CSCS and Build UK, recognized as equivalent to CITB SSSTS and SMSTS courses. They serve as the exclusive means for active Managers in the land-based industry to secure their LISS/CSCS cards.

Refreshers Courses
Refreshers are available for individuals who have completed the ROLO Supervisor and
Manager course previously – We can also offer a refresher for anyone that has completed
the SSSTS or SMSTS within the last 2 years and needs the ROLO level for Black/Gold card.
